You weren't the first

You weren’t the first
I fell in love with-
You weren’t the first
I slept with-
You weren’t the first
I loved from afar-
You weren’t the first
who loved another-

You weren’t the first
I stayed up late with
on the phone-
You weren’t the first
I said “I love you,” to-
You weren’t the first
To see me vulnerable-
You weren’t the first
To break my heart-

You weren’t the first
at anything,
but you were number one-
now that we are history
and all that’s said and done,
I think about you constantly-
of the times before
that were fun,
and how, at you,
I’d like another run.

But of course that wouldn’t happen,
though I’d love to have the chance,
because fate has already determined
that we’ve had our final dance-

So I’ll turn the page on this chapter,
ready to start the next-
you weren’t the first, you weren’t the last,
but you sure as hell were the best

Guiding Light

First new one posted here in a while. Wrote this while driving home from Nashville:

Black was the sky
in the middle of the night,
except for a solitary star-
a single ray of light.
As I looked up,
from the steering wheel,
at that guiding light-
I wondered if you, so very very far,
were looking at the same sight-
that was bringing me home
to you
tonight.

Not A Musing

An angel was my muse,
but she has lost her wings
and I know not where she lies tonight-
probably helping some poor artist sing

Because of her I wrote of love
and I wrote of loss.
Now all I wrote lies in a bin
with the rest of the trash I've tossed

Now the only reason I've to write
is to write that I've lost all reason
and hope that the fall of my writing
has a spring alike the seasons

Final stages of my book

As I type this I am in the final stages of putting together my submission to the Walt Whitman Award which may be the first step in getting published! My good friend April is to my left using her education to edit all my shit. Then we just got to put everything in order...then put it all in digital format to submit. Needless to say I'm very excited, this has been a long time coming.

I believe last time I said I wasn't deploying thus I had more time to write, well now I am deploying, so I'm finishing this up to submit earlier than I wanted, but doesn't mean it's any less of what I wanted my submission to be, just shorter.

This is just one big step, I plan on writing a ton when I get back and entering more contests in the mean time. It won't be until April of 2015 that I'll find out the results so I'm not going to be sitting idly by waiting for results!

Sarah's Riverwalk

We walked hand in hand
down by the river
at night-
licking ice-cream,
music drew us to the water.
ZZ Top lookalikes rocked out
while I wrapped my arm around you-
you looked at me with those blue eyes
and I stared back…

It had been years since I felt
even a fraction
of the happiness
that I
felt right then
and although the night would end
when you took me home
this moment could stay with me
forever.

The moon looked beautiful
reflected in the river
as you did
reflected in my eyes-
We walked hand in hand
down by the river
at night.
